For group leaders

Aalto Research Software Engineers are part of Science-IT, a research infrastructure in the School of Science. We serve everyone in Aalto, though.

If your group needs computing, data, or research software development, but it’s something that you don’t have time to do or it isn’t your specialty, we can help with that while you focus on your actual science. We are all former researchers ourselves and can seamlessly work with you.

Small support: “Garage” office hour

If you or your group has any short term problems and want to talk to a specialist in computing, send them to the Scientific Computing Garage any workday at 13:00. In it, you can ask anything and usually get an answer, or at least a pointer to the answer. You can, of course, also make use of this yourself to contact us to discuss your plans.

The garage is the starting point for small projects which go beyond garage but still are mostly in your hands.

Tell your group member’s it’s OK to ask for help.

Larger projects

We also do larger projects, for example developing a significant piece of software or service for your project. See Examples of past projects for examples. For these, we often act as part of your research team for the duration.

Depending on your unit, you get various amounts of time for free: the idea is that it’s better to help with medium size things than get stuck up in finance practices. For supporting units (currently mostly SCI), we can do amount a month of work “for free”. Beyond that, we’ll discuss and use some other funding.

If you have an idea, either current or future, we recommend discussing with us as soon as possible.

Preparing ideas

If you have a future idea or are writing a grant, we can help with planning your ambitions to see what is even possible. Writing in our services can make your grant more competitive, see Boilerplate text for grant proposals.
